Does It Matter Which Wood Glue I Use?
Mostly no — and occasionally very much yes
For the joints most hobbyists make — long-grain to long-grain, indoors, in dry wood — ordinary yellow PVA wood glue is the right answer, and a well-made PVA joint is stronger than the wood around it. The interesting question is when that stops being true. Adhesive types, their moisture and temperature limits, and the mechanics of bonded joints get a full chapter in the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook, which is worth skimming before you trust a glue bottle's marketing.
The main players
- PVA (yellow/white glue). The default. Easy cleanup with water, long shelf life, forgiving. Water-resistant versions exist for damp environments. Its weaknesses: it creeps slightly under sustained load, doesn't fill gaps, and won't bond oily exotics well.
- Polyurethane glue. Cures by reacting with moisture, foams as it cures, bonds wood to non-wood materials, handles exterior exposure. The foam has near-zero strength, so it is not a gap-filler despite appearances. Uncured squeeze-out is a nuisance to remove.
- Epoxy. The genuine gap-filler and the choice for oily woods, structural repairs, and bonding dissimilar materials. Two parts, measured and mixed, with working times from minutes to hours by formulation. Costs the most per joint.
- Hide glue. The traditional furniture glue, available in modern liquid form. Its signature trait is reversibility — joints can be taken apart with heat and moisture — which is why restorers love it. It also doesn't interfere with finishes the way PVA smears do.
- CA (cyanoacrylate). Instant bonds for small repairs, chips, and turning work. Not a structural furniture glue.
What actually makes joints strong
Glue choice matters less than joint execution. Three things dominate:
- Grain orientation. Long grain glued to long grain is strong; end grain glued to anything is weak, because end grain drinks glue away from the joint. That's why real joinery — mortises, dominoes, dowels, splines — exists: it converts end-grain situations into long-grain gluing surfaces.
- Fit. Glue joints want flat, freshly cut, tightly mating surfaces under firm clamp pressure. A gap that needs "strong glue" to bridge it usually needs a better-fitting joint instead — or epoxy, honestly used as a gap-filler.

Fumes and cleanup
Water-based PVAs and hide glues are as tame as workshop chemistry gets. Solvent-borne adhesives, epoxies, and CA glues are a different matter: they release volatile organic compounds as they cure, and CA fumes in particular are an eye and airway irritant. As with finishes, the label on the specific product governs — read it, especially for epoxy, where skin sensitization from repeated contact is a documented issue the manufacturers themselves warn about.
The one-bottle answer
If you're outfitting a first shop: a bottle of yellow PVA, a small tube of medium CA for emergencies, and nothing else until a specific project demands it. Buy epoxy when a specific gap or oily board shows up — not before, because glues have shelf lives and the money is better spent on lumber.
